Daufuskie Lighthouse Documentary
Thanks to islander Michael Hartle for this incredible pen and ink of the National Register of Historic Places Bloody Point Lighthouse located on Daufuskie Island. Actually you are looking at two (2) lighthouses...one on the beach and another that has always been known as the Silver Dew Winery. The back tower was destroyed in what was known as the sea island hurricane of 1893. The location shown for the front light is where John Mellencamp's home sits today. The light in the home's dormer window was a fifth order fresnel lens and the back light was a large locomotive lens. Sailors would align both lights, simular to sighting in a gun, to secure safe passage into the Savannah river. The front light was moved/pulled by oxen to its present location after the hurricane and became the Keepers cottage. A small wooden lighthouse structure was then placed on the beach and moved as the dunes changed position. My sincere appreciation once again to Michael Hartle for capturing the true essence and spirit of this South Carolina Nautical treasure.
